V "Oliveru Twistovi", který buržoazní kritika neprávem opomíjí jako "slabou" a "začátečnickou" práci Dickensovu, ačkoliv jí předcházely znamenité realistické črty a studie z londýnského života (Črty Bozovy aj.) i klasický humoristický román o Pickwickovcích, si může čtenář sám ověřit, zda obecné vývody o Dickensově lidovosti vztahu k člověku jsou správné. "Oliver Twist" není jen zcela záměrný pokus o realistické zobrazení soudobé skutečnosti, jak naznačil Dickens sám, když v předmluvě k románu napsal, že "cílem knihy byla nezkrášlená pravda".
