Kniha Roberta Burtona o melancholii, poprvé vydaná v roce 1621, patří k nejznámějším naučným dílům své doby. Téma melancholie má však kořeny v antické filozofii, kde jej zmiňuje již Aristotelés. Základem nauky o čtyřech temperamentech je teorie živlů, jak ji formulovali Hippokratés a Galénos. Burtonovo zpracování je unikátní, neboť se skutečně věnuje podrobnému rozboru melancholie. V souladu s literárními konvencemi 17. století však postrádá moderní systematičnost a místo toho sleduje analogie, jako je vztah mezi mikrokosmem a makrokosmem a projekce temperamentu do kosmického měřítka.
