Stylově, detailně propracovanou drobnokresbou postav i reálií (skvěle přibližuje atmosféru San Franciska přelomu 19. a 20. století) se blíží Proustovi, bravurní znepokojivostí (a vlastně do jisté míry i tematicky) pak třeba Plechovému bubínku Güntera Grasse.
