Bei diesem Kommentar geht es dem bekannten Autor vor allem darum, Zusammenhänge der Schrift zu verdeutlichen, die Gedanken Gottes darzulegen und so Auslegung mit Auferbauung zu verbinden. Daher sind die Ausführungen stets praxisbezogen und erfrischend zu lesen. Schwierige Bibelstellen werden nicht einfach übergangen, sondern ausführlich erklärt, und wichtige Themen in Exkursen behandelt. Mit Ausnahme der Psalmen, der Sprüche und des Buches Prediger werden die Bücher des Alten Testaments in der Regel abschnittweise behandelt und nicht Vers für Vers. Die Kommentare zum Text werden durch praktische Anwendungen geistlicher Wahrheiten und, wo angemessen, durch typologische Studien ergänzt. Abschnitte, die auf den kommenden Erlöser hinweisen, werden hervorgehoben und eingehender behandelt. Die Psalmen, die Sprüche und das Buch Prediger werden Vers für Vers behandelt, zum einen, weil sie sich nicht leicht zusammenfassen lassen, zum anderen, weil die meisten Gläubigen sie eingehender studieren möchten.
