Danny a Rafe jsou od dětských let přáteli a oba si zamilovali letadla a létání. Nerozešli se ani v dospělosti, kdy se oba stali piloty americké armády. V Evropě již zuří válka, ale američtí vojáci zatím tráví mírové dny na svých základnách. Přesto se Rafe, který je starší, přihlásí jako dobrovolník do britských RAF a odchází bojovat do Evropy. Krátce před odchodem se seznámí se zdravotní sestrou Evelyn. Evelyn a její kamarádky se přicházejí pobavit s vojáky z Rafeovy jednotky. Rafe a Evelyn spolu stráví poslední romantický večer.
