Antonia Whiteová byla autorkou, jejíž beletristická tvorba se často zabývala složitými mezilidskými vztahy a rodinnými tématy, zasazenými do neobvyklých osobních situací. Její postavy, ať už s katolickým nebo nekatolickým původem, se potýkaly s vnitřními konflikty a vzájemným ovlivňováním, pramenící z jejich rodinného zázemí a neúplného sebepoznání. Whiteová vkládala do svých děl vlastní zkušenosti s psychickým onemocněním, které nazývala „Zvíře“, a s pocity selhání. Sama přiznala, že tvůrčí proces pro ni nebyl zdrojem radosti, ale spíše bojem s pochybnostmi a „starými hrůzami“, které ji nutilo si dokazovat vlastní existenci jako spisovatelky.
