Piers Torday se narodil 6. dubna v hrabství Northumberland na severu Anglie. Pracoval v divadle Pleasance, v komediích a spolupracoval s televizí. V hloubi duše se však chtěl stát spisovatelem, a když jeho otec napsal ve věku 60 let svou první knihu ("Salmon Fishing in the Yemen" - tzv. "Lov lososů v Jemenu"), nechal se inspirovat. Nyní žije v Londýně.
