Johannes Overbeck byl německý archeolog a historik umění, který se proslavil svým hlubokým zájmem o mytologické umění starověkého Řecka. Ačkoli sám nepatřil k terénním archeologům, jeho teoretická práce a podrobné studie Pompejí a Herculanea, často založené na zprostředkovaných informacích, položily základy pro budoucí bádání. Overbeckův styl psaní mohl působit suše, ale jeho rozsáhlé znalosti a pečlivá organizace materiálů byly neocenitelné.
