      V roce 1969, po rozpadu vlivné levicové studentské organizace v USA, Students for Democratic Society (SDS), odešli ti nejmilitantnější členové a příznivci do podzemí, aby pokračovali ve svém boji razantnějšími, revolučními prostředky. Podle písně Boba Dylana si říkali Weathermen, nebo také Weather Underground. V první polovině 70. let jejich teroristické buňky zahájily ozbrojený boj proti symbolům moci Spojených států, jako byly policejní stanice, vojenská náborová centra, banky, nebo vězení. Při svém nejznámějším útoku se jim dokonce podařilo propašovat bombu do budovy Pentagonu a částečně ji poškodit. Většina aktivistů Weather Underground se po mnoha letech v podzemí sama přihlásila policii a vyvázla často jen s podmíněnými tresty. V nedávné době také pronikla na veřejnost informace o přátelství současného prezidenta USA, Baracka Obamy, se dvěma hlavními protagonisty Weather Underground, Billem Ayersem a Bernardine Dohrnovou. Odkaz skupiny Weather Underground měl a stále má vliv na americké levicové hnutí a tato kniha dokumentuje její vzestup a pád.
