The Media in Serbia, Croatia, Bosnia, and Hercegovina
""A fascinating study of the manipulation of the media in the former Yugoslavia."" -- The New York Times This study of the political manipulation of the media in Serbia, Croatia, Bosnia, and Herzegovina before and during the war argues that political struggles for media control are early warnings of war and a form of preparation for it.
The Western Front dominates our memories of the First World War. Yet, a million and half men died in North East Italy in a war that need never have happened, when Italy declared war on the Habsburg Empire in May 1915. Led by General Luigi Cadorna, the most ruthless of all the Great War commanders, waves of Italian conscripts were sent charging up the limestone hills north of Trieste to be massacred by troops fighting to save their homelands. This is a great, tragic military history of a war that gave birth to fascism. Mussolini fought in these trenches, but so did many of the greatest modernist writers in Italian and German - Ungaretti, Gadda, Musil, Hemingway. It is through these accounts that Mark Thompson, with great skill and empathy, brings to life this forgotten conflict.

The book explores the rich history and natural beauty of Presque Isle County in Michigan, highlighting its picturesque landscapes along Lake Huron and its lush forests. It traces the region's development from Native American settlements to the influx of European immigrants post-Civil War, who contributed to the lumber and limestone booms. Although these economic booms have faded, the area's serene environment continues to attract tourists and new residents seeking tranquility away from busier tourist destinations.
More Channels, Less Independence: Follow-up Reports
Television, a pillar of democracy and open societies, is changing at a breakneck pace. Patterns of production, transmission, consumption, marketing, financing, and ownership are all in flux. To take the measure of these changes and assess their impact on the independence of television especially in the new democracies of Central and Eastern Europe--the Open Society Institute has mapped the main developments in broadcasting legislation, policy, and markets in nine countries: Albania, Bulgaria, the Czech Republic, Italy, Lithuania, the Republic of Macedonia, Poland, Romania and Slovakia. These countries were previously included in the 2005 Television Across Europe monitoring project. The new reports are sequels, measuring the progress--or lack thereof--in improving the independence and pluralism of broadcasting over the past three years. As with the previous series of reports, these surveys are addressed to policymakers, civil society activists, and academics, as a contribution to bringing about change where it is needed.
