Píše se 2. listopad 1918, do konce války zbývá pár dnů. Zchudlý šlechtic, poručík Henri d'Aulnay-Pradelle, který je však mimořádně ambiciózní a kvůli uznání či povýšení ochotný jít i přes mrtvoly, žene svoji jednotku na nesmyslnou zteč kóty 311. Tato událost nerozlučitelně spojí i dva vojíny, Alberta Maillarda a Édouarda Péricourta. Jejich osudy sledujeme i po skončení války, stejně jako lukrativní zakázky firem, které se rozhodly vydělávat na smrti… Osud způsobí, že se Édouard s nenáviděným poručíkem ještě jednou setká.
