Jirka při hledání brigády náhodou natrefí na jednu neobvyklou nabídku práce. Má se starat o hodně zvláštní zvířata ukrytá před zvědavci na stařičkém statku Črví grunt. Zvířata, která by už správně neměla být… Anebo by dokonce měla existovat jen v mýtech a legendách. Nebudeme prozrazovat vše, ale mezi obyvateli Črvího gruntu jsou například masožravé kachny nebo jistý vyhynulý pták zvaný dodo. Taková stvoření by u veřejnosti vzbuzovala až příliš velkou senzaci, proto se majitelka statku paní Lipová snaží o maximální utajení. Bohužel přes všechnu péči a ostražitost se jednomu ze svěřenců podaří uprchnout. Jako na potvoru je to zrovna obří bazilišek Krutián. Hodný, ale hladový. V městečku začne brzy mizet drobné domácí zvířectvo. Navíc okolo slídí zlá preparátorka Krista Opálová, která by si Krutiána moc ráda přidala do své sbírky vycpanin. Jirka ho musí vypátrat dřív!!! A začnou se dít věci…
