V první části, nazvané Portrét neviditelného muže, autor popisuje vzpomínky a pocity, jež v něm vyvolává smrt jeho otce, odtažitého a zdrženlivého muže. Vyřizování pozůstalosti přivádí vypravěče k rekonstrukci důvodů otcova samotářského života. Náhodně odkrývá utajenou šedesát let starou rodinnou vraždu, která je i pozdním klíčem k pochopení obtížného otcova charakteru a vztah v typické rodině amerických židovských přistěhovalců. V druhé části, Knize paměti, která je vlastně eseji o minulosti a jejím vztahu k přítomnému okamžiku, se vypravěč neustále pohybuje na hranici mezi fiktivním světem slova a skutečností. Prostřednictvím mozaiky obrazů, analogií, mytologických či biblických odkazů a aluzí vytváří svět, jenž ho v samotě jeho vyprávění spojuje jak se světem odloučeného syna, tak s minulostí jeho předků a jejich příběhů.

Další zdařile vystavěný a umně napsaný román s rychle se odvíjejícím dějem a napínavou zápletkou, ostatně právě na to je čtenář u Paula Austera zvyklý. Tentokrát se jedná o příběh muže, na jehož manželství i intelektuální schopnosti vypravěč – jeho nejlepší přítel – žárlí. Poté, co muž náhle zemře, snaží se vypravěč kousek po kousku poslepovat okolnosti, které jeho smrti předcházely, ve snaze dobrat se pravdy dřív než ti, kteří případ vyšetřují, a prosadit vlastní verzi událostí. Poutavé vyprávění kombinující literární prvky psychologického románu a detektivního příběhu se dotýká přátelství a zrady, tělesné touhy a odcizení a odhaluje, jak nepředvídatelnými cestami může násilí pronikat do každodennosti lidského života.

Trojice románů, ve kterých autor vzdává hold tzv. „drsné škole“ americké detektivky. Quinn, autor laciných detektivek ve Skleněném městě (1985), se pustí na základě telefonického omylu do vyšetřování zapeklitého případu, jenž mu brzy přeroste přes hlavu a nakonec mu změní celý život. Ve druhém románu – Duchové (1986) – si Bily najme Modrého, žáka Hnědého, aby sledoval Černého. Modrý vysedává u okna a sleduje Černého, který v bytě přes ulici nedělá nic jiného, než sedí u stolu, píše nebo hledí z okna. A tak to jde pořád dokola, dokud si Modrý neuvědomí, že mu kdosi usiluje o život. Fanshawe, hrdina Zamknutého pokoje (1986), beze stopy zmizel; zanechal po sobě manželku a malého synka a skříň plnou vynikajících románů, divadelních her a básní. Co se s ním stalo, proč tak náhle opustil rodinu i dosavadní styl života a zda stále žije, na to se snaží přijít Fanshawův přítel z mládí a vypravěč celého příběhu. Přitom se však podivuhodně zaplétá do Fanshawova života a nakonec se chtě nechtě stává jeho součástí.

Román amerického spisovatele Paula Austera, vydaný poprvé v roce 1987, patří žánrově mezi tzv. antiutopie. Formou dopisu, který píše mladá žena své kamarádce z dětství, uvádí čtenáře do bezútěšné budoucnosti života v rozkládajícím se městě, kde platí zákon silnějšího a policejní represe. Infrastruktura ani průmysl nefungují, nic se nevyrábí, lidé se živí sbíráním odpadků, okrádáním mrtvol nebo páchají hromadné sebevraždy. Co vedlo k takovému rozpadu, není zřejmé. Mluví se o „kolapsu“, ale není to žádná katastrofa, prostě jen civilizace, jak ji známe, přestala fungovat. Město v mnohém připomíná svět, ve kterém žijeme, naši postindustriální společnost. Ještě jsou peníze, existuje policie a v určité podobě i městská správa, ale jinak jsou všichni ponecháni osudu, vládne násilí a korupce. Příběh mladé ženy, která se do města vydala hledat svého bratra novináře, uvízne v něm, žije na ulici a protlouká se, jak se dá, nakonec vyústí v plán, jak se skupinkou dalších z města uniknout... Kniha je považována za jedno z nejvýznamnějších Austerových děl a je kladena do jedné řady s antiutopiemi, jako je Huxleyův Konec civilizace. V roce 2008 byl příběh zfilmován argentinskými filmaři.

Paul Auster řeší v tomto románu otázku odpovědnosti za vlastní život, možnosti volby a vlivu na vlastní osud – základní otázky po smyslu lidské existence. Jde o příběh dvou mužů, kteří se náhodně setkají na cestách po Spojených státech. První systematicky utrácí dědictví po otci, druhý se naopak snaží přijít k penězům v kartách. První je ve středních letech, unavený a v podstatě odevzdaný, druhý je mladý, sebevědomý, optimistický. Starší muž má ještě poslední peníze, mladík pouze sebedůvěru, že dokáže každého obehrát v kartách, a tak se rozhodnou, že spojí své síly a pokusí se peníze a talent zhodnotit – proč ne, za pokus nic nedají. Mladík zná dvojici podivínů, kteří vyhráli obrovské jmění, a sjedná s nimi partii pokeru. Tak začíná hra, v níž sehrávají roli štěstí, odhodlání, um i odhad. Začíná poker – karetní hra, jež je přímo symbolem rizika – a mladší ani starší muž nevědí, že proti nim zasedl ke stolu osud. Nevědí, že je čeká partie, která neskončí rozdělením výhry, ale že je čeká hra o život, svobodu a důstojnost.

Austerův oslňující pikareskní román se odehrává vlastně v průběhu celého 20. století. Autor originálně a s nadhledem konfrontuje dospívání malého sirotka se zráním americké společnosti, tj. s událostmi, které otřásly na počátku minulého století dějinami Spojených států. Chlapec Walt se u záhadného mistra Jehudi naučí létat a poprvé vzlétne spolu s Charlesem Lindberghem a doslova a do písmene padá s newyorskou burzou. Waltův vzestup a sláva zobrazují Ameriku 20. století v jejích proměnách, v její pokleslosti i velikosti.

Vermontský profesor David Zimmer přišel před půl rokem při leteckém neštěstí o manželku a dva malé syny a od té doby se utápí v alkoholu. Jednoho dne náhodou narazí na krátkou ukázku ze ztracené grotesky komika němé éry Hektora Manna, což podnítí jeho zájem a vyvolá touhu prozkoumat život muže, který zmizel v roce 1929. Stejně jako v předchozích knihách Auster dovedně spřádá příběhy jednotlivých postav a rychle plynoucí, přesvědčivý děj zároveň obohacuje o další dimenze a souvislosti: do sebe vložené příběhy, exkurzy do literární teorie a historie a esejistické vložky. Tyto momenty ovšem autor zakomponovává do příběhu způsobem nenápadným a nepoučujícím, takže působí hladce a nerušivě i na čtenáře, který se soustředí jen na primární děj. Osudy několika sympaticky pošetilých postav, zavátých do Brooklynu z různých částí Spojených států i světa, se vzájemně střetávají a prolínají v posledních letech 20. století. Za životními zvraty, připomínajícími karnevalové výměny masek, se nenápadně skrývá Smrt. Obchází permanentně kolem všech postav ať již v podobě choroby, deprese či závažné změny životních podmínek avšak zároveň ruku v ruce s možností nového života. Jednotlivé bizarní příběhy, vypovídající o individuální historii, jsou v závěru románu překvapivě konfrontovány s něčím vskutku nadosobním: do newyorského mikrosvěta příběhů jeho postav náhle, na počátku nového tisíciletí, vpadne jakýsi větší příběh, který ty malé zásadně přesahuje.

V nejnovějším románu se Paul Auster představuje v takové podobě, na jakou jsme u něj zvyklí – jako výborný vypravěč příběhů, který využívá postupy a prvky pokleslých žánrů. Autor pracuje s motivy detektivního, špionážního, sci-fi, válečného a milostného románu, přičemž příběhy často vkládá do sebe a zároveň nenásilně rozvíjí úvahy o povaze reality a lidských dějin. Základní linii vyprávění tvoří stárnoucí nedávno ovdovělý spisovatel. Následkem dopravní nehody je upoutaný na invalidní vozík, proto žije v domě s rozvedenou dcerou Miriam a vnučkou Katyou. Přemítání o uplynulém životě se v jeho hlavě prolíná s vymýšlením příběhu. Owen Brick, hlavní hrdina spisovatelova příběhu, je kouzelník vystupující ve školách a v domovech důchodců. Jednoho dne se ocitne v podivné jámě, a poté co je z ní vytažen, zjistí, že byl odveden do armády. S údivem se dozvídá, že ve Spojených státech zuří občanská válka, jakási obdoba války Severu proti Jihu, a on je pověřen úkolem zabít jednoho člověka…

Román Paula Austera z roku 2006 je zvláštní, tajuplná próza. Hlavní hrdina pan Blank se probouzí v poloprázdné místnosti, neví, kdo je, ani to, proč je zde. Vše se odehrává v uzavřeném prostoru, do něhož sice z vnějšího světa postupem času vstupují různé osoby a jejich ne zcela dořečené příběhy, avšak zdá se, že tyto návštěvy spíše ještě prohlubují uzavřenost světa, v němž se pan Blank nevysvětlitelně ocitl a ve kterém to jediné, čím si může být jist, je pocit viny, jehož příčinu nezná. Dialogy s návštěvníky situaci nevyjasní, nadto se v nich ještě více stírá hranice reality a fikce, smyšlené a skutečné historie. Pokud se čtenář snaží předjímat, je vzápětí nucen své domněnky opouštět. Návštěvníci jsou v nějakém vztahu k panu Blankovi, to je zřejmé, často dokonce naznačují, že právě on nese odpovědnost za to, co se jim přihodilo, ale ani tato fakta záhadu zmíněného zamčeného pokoje neosvětlují… Stylistická a kompoziční vybroušenost knihy není na újmu čtivosti; naopak rysy špionážního příběhu a tajemné náznaky udržují čtenáře v napětí od začátku až do překvapivého konce…

Von da aus geht er zurück in die amerikanische Geschichte und erklärt, warum die Waffe in der Hand des freien Bürgers in direkter Linie aus der Gewalt der Sklavenhaltergesellschaft hervorgegangen ist. Der Streit ums Waffentragen führt ins Zentrum der aktuellen Auseinandersetzungen um die Gestaltung des amerikanischen Gesellschaftssystems. Auster zeigt sich hier als ebenso polemischer wie klarsichtiger politischer Beobachter und Kommentator.
