Publikace vzniklá v roce 1963 je dnes již klasickou prací světového feministického hnutí. Autorka se z velmi širokého pohledu zabývá postavením ženy ve společnosti, její úlohou, degradací rodiny a rodinných vztahů, problémem profesní seberealizace, sexuální seberealizace a krizí ženské identity vůbec. I přes dobu vzniku zůstává kniha stále aktuální a má co říci i na počátku 21. století.
