Kniha vypráví o starém hudebníkovi Ponsovi, který rád sbírá starožitnosti a je na obtíž svým bohatým příbuzným, a také o jeho jediném příteli, naivním Němci Schmuckem. Pons se snaží zavděčit svým příbuzným a domluví své neteři, která má problém se provdat, námluvy bohatého obchodníka. Ten ji však nechce a tak rodina, která nechce poškodit svou pověst, svede všechno na ubohého Ponse. Přestanou jej přijímat a Pons onemocní. Jediný, kdo se o něj stará, je Schmucke. Když se však rozšíří, že jeho sbírka má ohromnou cenu, začnou se do jeho přízně vplétat různí lidé a snaží se urvat aspoň kousek z dědictví. Pons chce však všechno odkázat Schmuckemu.
