Svou opravdovostí zasáhl čtenáře ve čtyřiceti zemích světa a v milionových nákladech stále zůstává hlavní literární událostí knižních žebříčků. Román byl rovněž zfilmován režisérem Marcem Forsterem v roce 2007.
