Na problematickou regulérnost tohoto zápasu dohlížejí protagonisté z Noční hlídky, reprezentující Světlo, a Denní hlídky, která naopak ochraňuje zájmy Tmy. Hrdiny těchto tří próz jsou Jiní – bývalí lidé, v nichž obě soupeřící strany rozpoznaly nadpřirozené schopnosti a snaží se je získat na svou stranu… Po světě se tato trilogie proslavila nejen díky bravurnímu literárnímu ztvárnění, ale také díky filmu, který byl natočen podle prvního dílu Noční hlídka, a co je pro Čechy zvláště zajímavé, byl natočen v Praze. Příznivci tohoto žánru si tedy jistě přijdou na své.

Setkává se s dvěma vášnivými ženami, jež jsou zásadně a ve všem odlišné: s bohatou vdovou Schlesingerovou a tajuplnou Italkou Franceskou, která je zřejmě do případu nějak záhadně zapletena. Pozvolna se potvrzuje domněnka, že útok nesouvisí s mezinárodní mafií obchodující s lidskými orgány, nýbrž byl namířen přímo na archeologa, jenž se chystal uveřejnit akta, která by vzbudila světovou senzaci. Je tu však nebezpečný protivník, jenž tomu hodlá za každou cenu zabránit – Vatikán.
