Flowering plants of the Kalahari dunes illustrates 236 plant species, concentrating on the common and conspicuous species, while a few of the rare and endemic species have also been included. The total number of plant species recorded within the area, presently exceeds 600 species. The plant species have been arranged in groups according to their growth form to make identification easier. Within each growth form the plant families have been arranged in an order that reflects their relationships with each other. Plant identifications were done by the staff of the National Botanical Institute and the Schweickerdt Herbarium and voucher specimens are housed in the Schweickerdt Herbarium at the University of Pretoria (PRU) and the Kimberley South African National Parks Herbarium (KSAN). A field herbarium is kept in the Kgalagadi Transfrontier Park. As far as possible, English and/or Afrikaans common names have been included. Note that sometimes the same name is used for different species, or that different names are sometimes used for the same species. In this guide the primary means of identifying a species is by the photographs. Important information on size, flower colour variation, flowering times, habitat and distribution are added in the descriptions and are meant to facilitate the identification.
