Příběh dvou sester před třicítkou, které k sobě nacházejí cestu přes schválnosti současnosti a traumata z minulosti. Sestry Maggie a Rose nemají zdánlivě vůbec nic společného. Rose vystudovala Princeton, pracuje v přední právnické firmě, je zodpovědná, leč neatraktivní. Maggie střední školu dokončila s odřenýma ušima, vyhovující zaměstnání dosud nenašla a své sestře je ztřeštěnou, sobeckou a většinou parazitující zátěží, ale je krásná a svého vzhledu umí zneužívat. Poté, co kromě sestřiných bot či peněz použije Maggie i jejího přítele, se sestry definitivně rozejdou. Ale právě tímto momentem se nastartuje proces velké proměny obou žen. Autorka obratně vytváří hrdinku, s níž se mohou čtenářky snadno ztotožnit;- její zklamání, traumata i obavy jsou přesvědčivé a proces vyzrávání obou protagonistek nikdy nepřekročí míru uvěřitelnosti. Mužské postavy jsou poněkud plošší, ale o ně tolik nejde, ty příběh pouze dokreslují - autorka ví, že píše pro ženy...... celý text

Op een stormachtige nacht vol sneeuw aan het begin van de jaren zestig verlost een jonge dokter zelf zijn vrouw. Tot hun verrassing wordt er een tweeling geboren. Helaas blijkt een van de kinderen het Down-syndroom te hebben. Omdat zijn vrouw door de verdoving te versuft is om te merken wat er aan de hand is, vertelt de dokter haar dat het meisje gestorven is. Hij geeft de baby mee aan een verpleegster, die haar meeneemt naar haar huis in plaats van naar een inrichting. De verpleegster voedt het kind op als was het van haarzelf. Dan ontspint zich een verhaal rond deze personages: de arts en zijn vrouw, de verpleegster die een partner krijgt en de kinderen die gescheiden opgroeien, maar elkaar door een speling van het lot uiteindelijk toch zullen ontmoeten.
