Junot Díaz, americký autor původem z Dominikánské republiky, vyrůstající v New Jersey a nyní žijící v New Yorku, si získal nadšené zástupy čtenářů a posléze i uznání v podobě Pulitzerovy ceny v r. 2008 právě tímto románem. Hlavní postava Oskar (narážka na Oscara Wilda) je milý, ale značně obtloustlý nýmand, který v New Jersey sní o tom, že se stane dominikánským Tolkienem a že díky tomu najde konečně lásku. Možná se mu to ale nikdy nemá splnit, protože jeho rodinu už po několik generací pronásleduje prastará kletba zvaná fukú, jež je sužuje různými pohromami, smůlou a hlavně nešťastnými láskami. Oskar stále jen teprve sní o svém prvním polibku a zdá se být zatím poslední obětí rodinné kletby, když se jednoho osudového léta rozhodne, že to s fukú skoncuje. Ve jménu lásky je třeba riskovat všechno.

Soubor volně zachycuje životní cesty Juniora, který přijíždí jako chlapec s matkou a bratrem za otcem do USA, přes jeho první citová a tělesná vzplanutí, pověstné sukničkaření až po nevěru, která mu zásadně změní život – přijde o snoubenku a není schopen se z toho ani po letech vybabrat. Může za to jízlivý, téměř nepřítomný otec, jehož kratičké okamžiky přítomnosti v chlapcově životě mají spíš ničivý účinek? Nebo matka upřednostňující vymodleného staršího bratra? Nebo komplikovaný vztah se starším bratrem, k němuž Junior nikdy nenašel cestu, ale přesto se nedokáže vyrovnat s jeho smrtí?
