Amy Alden finds an abandoned nest of goose eggs and brings them home. The baby geese think that she is their mother and follow her wherever she goes. Amy and her dad know that the geese must fly south for the winter, but first they will have to teach them to fly away home.
A la mort de sa mère, Amy, treize ans, vient vivre au Canada chez son père, un ingénieur-bricoleur un peu fou. Elle se sent très seule, jusqu'au jour où elle prend sous sa protection seize petites oies sauvages. Mais l'hiver approche : les oies doivent migrer vers les pays chauds. Amy et son père décident de les y aider et construisent de drôles de machines volantes pour les accompagner.
