Historická biografie na pomezí biografického románu vypráví osudy Wilhelma Brasse, který byl v létě 1940 internován v Osvětimi. Tam se mu podařilo přežívat díky tomu, že byl šikovný fotograf, a pro nacistickou mašinerii, libující si v přesné evidenci a dokumentaci, fotografoval vězně, ale i popravy a lékařské pokusy na lidech. Dohromady zhotovil přes 50.000 snímků. Kniha rekonstruuje pět let, které Wilhelm Brasse strávil ve vyhlazovacím táboře, a vychází z historických dokumentů a ze vzpomínek samotného autora, který zemřel v roce 2012 ve věku 94 let.

The narrative flickers at a frenetic clip from false starts and early failures to eventual triumph in the magical moment when - before the eyes of a stupefied film crew - Charlie became the Tramp: with a little moustache, a shuffling slantwise walk, a cane and a dusty bowler hat, one of the most iconic figures of the golden age of cinema was born.
