A commentary on Atisha Dipamkara Shrijnana's A lamp for the Path to Enlightenment and Lama Je Tsong Khapa's Lines of experience
This book contains methods for transforming everyday actions into the cause of enlightenment, anger into patience, and the ordinary view of phenomena as inherently existent into the wisdom realizing emptiness. It also includes several meditations led by Rinpoche, although everything in the book is a topic for meditation.
Buddhism is not a fanatical religion but a philosophical approach to living. Studying Buddhism does not require extreme beliefs; it involves personal investigation and experimentation. Understanding, rather than blind belief, is crucial, as belief without comprehension can be dangerous. Lord Buddha emphasized that true liberation comes from understanding and knowledge. The practice of Dharma should aim for the complete cessation of suffering by eradicating its root: ignorance and the delusions that arise from it. True peace is achieved when ignorance, attachment, and anger are eliminated, leading to lasting freedom and unchanging peace. During their first trip to Europe, Lama Yeshe and Lama Zopa Rinpoche conducted a weekend seminar based on their renowned month-long Kopan meditation courses. This included a lecture by Lama Yeshe at Kensington Town Hall and teachings at Royal Holloway College, Surrey, covering the entire Buddhist path to enlightenment. The seminar was recorded and is available on a historic DVD titled Freedom Through Understanding. Published by the Lama Yeshe Wisdom Archive, a non-profit organization, this title aims to make the teachings of Lama Yeshe and Lama Zopa Rinpoche widely accessible. The Archive offers thousands of pages of teachings, audio recordings, and other resources online, along with opportunities for support. Visit the Lama Yeshe Wisdom Archive website for more information.
This first volume of collected teachings features insights from Lama Yeshe during the 1970s and 1980s, when he and Lama Zopa Rinpoche traveled globally to share their wisdom. Lama Yeshe emphasized the importance of recognizing and developing our limitless potential, making his teachings as relevant today as they were then. Part 1 focuses on transforming our lives through warm-heartedness and “knowledge-wisdom,” while encouraging a relaxed approach to practice. Edited by Nicholas Ribush, this section includes previously unpublished material. Part 2, edited by Uldis Balodis, presents three discourses from Lama Yeshe at the 1983 Kopan meditation course in Nepal, where he provided essential guidance on practicing Dharma in the West. Excerpts from these teachings have appeared in the ebook series, The Enlightened Experience: Volumes 1–3, as well as in the Lama Yeshe Wisdom Archive and Mandala magazine. We express gratitude to Ven. Tenzin Drachom and the students who supported the production of this book.
