Joanna Cole byla autorkou dětských knih a pedagožkou přírodních věd. Je nejvíce známá jako autorka série dětských knih The Magic School Bus. Její tvorba zahrnuje přes 250 knih, od své první knihy Cockroach po slavnou sérii The Magic School Bus. Coleová se narodila v Newarku v New Jersey a vyrůstala v nedalekém East Orange. Jako dítě milovala vědu a měla učitelku, která jí připomínala paní Frizzleovou. Vystudovala City College of New York, kde získala titul bakaláře psychologie. Po absolvování postgraduálních kurzů pracovala rok jako knihovnice na newyorské základní škole.
