Být o něčem přesvědčen na základě víry je podle Dawkinse v ostrém rozporu s přesvědčením na základě racionálních argumentů. Cílem Dawkinsovy knihy je zvýšit sebevědomí ateistů, jejichž pozice např. v USA je podle autora na úrovni homosexuálů před 50 lety. Dále je kniha určena všem, kteří by chtěli odvrhnout náboženství, ale mají obavy, zda i bez něj je možné žít plnohodnotný, šťastný a mravný život.
