Přestože Anthony Burgess patřil k autorům mimořádně plodným, jeho nejznámějším dílem, jímž vstoupil nejen do dějin literatury, ale i populární kultury, navždy zůstane román Mechanický pomeranč. Když roku 1971 převedl tuto svéráznou futuristickou vizi moderní společnosti na stříbrné plátno Stanley Kubrick, setkal se film s tak ostrou kritikou, že jej režisér z britské distribuce raději stáhl. Přemíra násilných scén však není v tomto díle prvkem samoúčelným, lacině provokativním – tvoří pevnou součást vyprávění, které je stejně strhující jako originální. Mechanický pomeranč totiž naprosto porušuje obvyklou literární strukturu a stavbu.
