Když angloirský spisovatel a kněz Jonathan Swift (30. 11. 1667 – 19. 10. 1745) vydal roku 1726 pod pseudonymem Lemuel Gulliver knihu Travels into Several Remote Nations of the World, in Four Parts, by Lemuel Gulliver, First a Surgeon, and then a Captain of several Ships (Cesty k několika vzdáleným národům světa ve čtyřech dílech, napsal Lemuel Gulliver, zprvu ranhojič a později kapitán na několikerých lodích), později zkráceně Gulliverovy cesty, byla během týdne vyprodaná. Přinášíme vám první a známější dvě části tohoto satirického pojednání o lidské povaze a zároveň parodie na tehdejší cestopisy – Cestu mezi trpaslíky žijící v zemi Lilliput a cestu k obrům z Brobdingangu. Protože jde o poměrně složitý a dlouhý text, některé pasáže jsme upravili a zkrátili.
