Helene Cooper, a descendant of two Liberian dynasties, grew up at Sugar Beach, a lavish mansion by the sea, surrounded by luxury and the customs of her heritage. Her childhood was rich with experiences, from playing traditional games to enjoying family gatherings. At eight, the Coopers welcomed a foster child, Eunice, a Bassa girl, who became part of the family. The three girls thrived in their privileged environment until April 12, 1980, when a coup d'état shattered their lives. Soldiers assassinated President Tolbert, targeting the elite Congo class, including the Coopers. Following a violent attack, Helene, her sister Marlene, and their mother fled to America, leaving Eunice behind. In the U.S., Helene struggled to assimilate as a teenager but found her passion for journalism at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. She became a reporter for prominent publications, covering global events while Liberia descended into chaos. A near-death experience in Iraq in 2003 compelled her to confront her past and return to Liberia. This memoir explores themes of tragedy, forgiveness, and resilience, chronicling Helene's journey of self-discovery and her quest to reconnect with her roots.
