As the Holocaust is memorialized worldwide through education programs and commemoration days, the common perception is that after survivors arrived and settled in their new homes they continued on a successful journey from rags to riches. While this story is comforting, a closer look at the experience of Holocaust survivors in North America shows it to be untrue. The arrival of tens of thousands of Jewish refugees was palpable in the streets of Montreal and their impact on the existing Jewish community is well-recognized. But what do we really know about how survivors' experienced their new community? Drawing on more than 60 interviews with survivors, hundreds of case files from Jewish Immigrant Aid Services, and other archival documents, The Montreal Shtetl presents a portrait of the daily struggles of Holocaust survivors who settled in Montreal, where they encountered difficulties with work, language, culture, health care, and a Jewish community that was not always welcoming to survivors. By reflecting on how institutional supports, gender, and community relationships shaped the survivors''settlement experiences, Abramson and Lynch show the relevance of these stories to current state policies on refugee immigration.

    • This modern spiritual classic is a touching and human portrait of the woman who was the mother of Christ, drawn with reverence and dignity―a narrative poem of special distinctiveness, universal in its appeal, and written in fluent verse of exceptionally high quality. The book does not draw on legend or easy fancy. Although written before the renewal of scriptural scholarship, the poem's biblical basis remains surprisingly valid. The story of Mary is told completely and with remarkable depth of human insight, and mounts in beauty and power as it goes along, till in the dark, almost unbearably real climax of the pain, the glory, the defeat The long inaugural at Calvary the Woman Wrapped in Silence becomes wholly magnificent in her last Tremendous majesty. †

Focusing on Belfast's shipbuilding legacy, the book delves into the histories of prominent shipbuilders like Harland & Wolff and lesser-known McIllwain & Co. Dr. John Lynch uncovers the stories behind numerous vessels constructed over 140 years, beyond the Titanic narrative. The research includes an alphabetical ship index, building lists, and insights into vessel name changes, complemented by illustrations. Additionally, it explores the shipyards and key figures who influenced the industry's rise and decline, providing a comprehensive view of Belfast's maritime heritage.

    • “This feast of a book . . . will captivate readers from its opening double-page spread. . . . Sweeping and grand, this personal take on a familiar story is an engaging success.” — Kirkus Reviews (starred review) Leaving the docks of London on the Mayflower as an indentured servant to Pilgrim John Carver, John Howland little knew that he was embarking on the adventure of a lifetime. By his great good fortune, John survived falling overboard on the crossing of the Atlantic Ocean, and he earned his keep ashore by helping to scout a safe harbor and landing site for his bedraggled and ill shipmates. Would his luck continue to hold amid the dangers and adversity of the Pilgrims’ lives in New England? P.J. Lynch captures this pivotal moment in American history in precise and exquisite detail, from the light on the froth of a breaking wave to the questioning voice of a teen in a new world.

Abramson combines patient stories with what he learned during many years of serving as an expert in national drug litigation, and reveals the tangled web of financial interest at the heart of the dysfunction in our health-care system. Big Pharma funds most clinical trials and therefore controls the research agenda, and withholds the real data as "corporate secrets." He shines a light on the dark underbelly of American health care-- and presents a path toward genuine reform. -- adapted from jacket
