Klasik francouzské prózy Alphonse Daudet (1840-1897) je sice považován za čelného představitele naturalismu, nikdy však nesdílel jeho pesimismus, věřil v dobrotu prostého člověka, jehož zidealizovaný obraz tvoří hrdinové velké části jeho děl. Takové jsou i Dopisy z mého mlýna. Dojemnéa krásné povídky z jeho rodné Provence mají ve své prostotě až kouzelnou moc.
