Emmanuel Carrère románově zpracoval životopis jedné z nejbizarnějších postav, které ovládají dnešní Rusko – Eduard Limonov po emigraci v roce 1974 působil v bohémské a mediální sféře New Yorku, pak v Paříži jako spisovatel, bojoval po boku Srbů v bosenské válce a po návratu do Ruska se stal vůdcem protiputinovského hnutí (Národně bolševická strana). Autorovi předci pocházejí z Gruzie, on sám mluví rusky, k ruskému prostředí má velmi blízko a v knize ho dokázal velmi zasvěceně vylíčit.

Příběh začíná na Srí Lance na Vánoce roku 2004, v exotické zemi, kam se vypravěč uchýlí se svou přítelkyní, s níž má v úmyslu se rozejít. Rozchod se ohlašuje z obou stran, známá událost s katastrofickou vlnou tsunami však oba rozcházející se partnery stmelí. Jsou svědky drastických okolností, za kterých jejich přátelé z téhož hotelu pátrají po svých pohřešovaných rodinných příslušnících. Utrpení je podáváno velmi naturalisticky, autor čtenáře nešetří. Doma ve Francii však na ně čeká další zkouška, vážné a nevyléčitelné nemoci jejich blízkých…

V Protivníkovi se rozhodl vylíčit příběh skrývající se za proslulou kauzou Jeana-Clauda Romanda, zdánlivě bezbranného člověka, který chladnokrevně zavraždil svou ženu, děti i rodiče, jimž prakticky celý život lhal a na jejichž účet žil. Carrére navázal s uvězněným Romandem kontakt, účastnil se soudního procesu a ve svém románu se posléze snažil odhalit vrahovu osobnost a vystopovat důvody, které jej vedly až k tak brutálnímu činu.
