Historická studie detailně sleduje průběh procesu s templáři. Představuje protagonisty těchto událostí a jejich motivace, snaží se objasnit, do jaké míry byla obvinění vznesená proti řádu v průběhu procesu odůvodněná. V říjnu roku 1307 byli členové řádu na základě závažných obvinění (popírání Krista, sodomie, uctívání model) zatčeni a uvězněni z rozkazu francouzského krále Filipa IV. V následujícím procesu, který se protáhl do roku 1312, se střetly zájmy francouzského panovníka s autoritou papežství. Na nátlak francouzské strany byl na koncilu ve Vienne papežem Klementem V. řád zrušen a jeho majetek přiznán johanitům. Francouzský král posléze získal obrovskou sumu jako náhradu za výdaje spojené s procesem. Čelní představitele řádu byli roku 1314 odsouzeni na doživotí, velmistr Jakub z Molay a preceptor v Normandii, Geoffrey ze Charney, skončili téhož roku jako zatvrzelí kacíři na hranici. Autor, britský historik, zasazuje proces s templáři do širšího historického kontextu a na základě rozboru dochovaných pramenů rekonstruuje skutečné příčiny pádu mocného a bohatého rytířského řádu.

It developed into one of the most powerful corporations in the medieval world which lasted for nearly two centuries until its suppression in 1312.
