Spisovatel, zpěvák, písničkář – to všechno je Leonard Cohen. Kniha toužení je však sbírkou básní a dodejme tedy k seznamu Cohenových profesí, že je básník, a to básník v Čechách nikoliv neznámý (sbírky Smrt muže, který patřil jedné ženě, Výbor z poezie, Květiny pro Hitlera...). Sbírka vznikala od 90. let do současnosti, z velké části v zenbuddhistickém klášteře na hoře Mt. Baldy v Kalifornii. Tuto horu, jak praví encyklopedický slovník, "navštěvují obvykle zkušení lyžaři, které láká technická nesnadnost zdejších sjezdovek". Zkušený mistr slova Cohen zde v tiché kontemplaci pět let působil jako kuchař a tajemník svého duchovního učitele Sasaki Roshiho. "Rozhovory se zde netrpí," řekl později. Ke komunikaci obyvatel kláštera sloužila převážně gesta a zvuky zvonků, řehtaček a klapaček. O to větší soustředění nalezl na psaní písňových textů a básní na svá obvyklá témata: láska, Bůh, židovství, stáří, smrt.

Když v roce 1967 vyšlo jeho první album, byl už Leonard Cohen ve své rodné Kanadě známý jako básník a romanopisec a ve Spojených státech jako autor písně „Suzanne“, která za svou obrovskou popularitu vděčila nahrávce Judy Collinsové. Po úspěchu prvního a během vydání dalších deseti alb získal pověst skvělého spisovatele a zpívajícího básníka. S postupem let se stal doslova kultovním umělcem.
