Slečnu Marplovou poprosí její bývalá přítelkyně z mládí Ruth van Rydocková, aby navštívila starobylé anglické sídlo Stonygates, kde žije její sestra Carrie Louise se široce rozvětvenou rodinou. Stonygates ovšem není typickým anglickým sídlem – druhý manžel Carrie Louise si ho vybral k dost podivnému experimentu – udělat z něj jakési nápravné zařízení, či spíše internát pro mladistvé zločince a zkusit je tak vrátit na správnou cestu.
