This 1981 book suggests an insightful approach to Hardy as a poet and novelist. With the novels in particular it concentrates not so much on ideas and attitudes as on the texture of the writing, and on the crucial importance in it between one kind of exposition and another. John Bayley starts by establishing a difference between Hardy the private 'noticer' of things and people, and Hardy the professional author committed to interpreting these observations to his readers. The vital ingredients of eroticism and humour are analysed in detail, as are the unusual ways in which passiveness, 'pessimism', and anthropomorphism function in the poems and novels, and an insightful reading of Tess is put forward. Professor Bayley shows that the rewards of reading Hardy are greater than ever, although they are not necessarily those which the reader expects, or has been taught to look for.

Román Vojna a mír (napsáno v letech 1863-1869, vydáno v roce 1869) je čtyřdílná románová epopej, jedno z největších a nejslavnějších děl světové literatury. Lev Tolstoj se v názvu své knihy inspiroval ve stejnojmenném díle francouzského anarchisty a filosofa Pierra-Josepha Proudhona. V románu vystupuje na 250 postav hlavních i epizodních včetně historických osobností cara Alexandra I., císaře Napoleona či generála Kutuzova. Obsáhlé, barvité líčení bitev (u Slavkova, u Borodina) či vylidněné, hořící Moskvy nemá ve světové literatuře obdoby. Komorní scény ze života vyšší společnosti a milostná vzplanutí a dobrodružství se střídají s líčením historických událostí a boje ruského lidu proti Napoleonovi. Při psaní se Tolstoj neinspiroval jen světovými historickými událostmi, ale i osudy vlastní rodiny. Například předobrazem románové postavě Nataši Rostovové a jejím životním strastem byla autorovi jeho vlastní švagrová T. A Kuzminská. První část epopeje se odehrává v roce 1805 a obsahuje např. popis bitvy u Slavkova.
