Revidovaný překlad slavného středověkého rukopisu, obsahujícího nejstarší a nejvelkolepější germánské mytické a hrdinské písně. Mytická část vypráví islandské ságy, příběhy severských božstev od vzniku světa až po jeho soumrak, např. o moudrém Ódinovi, o zamilovaném Frejovi, o rozlíceném Thórovi, o šlechetném Baldrovi a o proradném Lokim. Hrdinská část pojednává o životech a skutcích lidí, jako byli Sigurd nebo Brynhilda, héroů známých i z německé mytologie a proslavených Wagnerovými operami. Písně hrdinské vznikly přímo na Islandu.
Jedná se o tzv. Poetickou Eddu, na rozdíl od tzv. Prozaické Eddy autora z 13. st. Snoriho Sturlusona, která je spíše učebnicí poetiky pro začínající skaldy – na verších svých i starších skaldů vysvětluje rytmus, metriku atd., prostě „jak se dělá báseň“.
Edda obsahuje tzv. eddické písně, které nemají autora, pocházejí z různých období a písemně byly zaznamenány v 13. století v Kodexu Regius v Královské knihovně v Kodani. G. Neckel je vydal jako vydavatel. Překlad Ladislava Hegera z islandštiny zrevidovala a doslovem opatřila Helena Kadečková.
