Proslulé dílo francouzské literatury 19. století se v psychologickém příběhu nešťastně provdané ženy kriticky zabývá maloměstskou společností své doby. Hrdinka, manželka venkovského lékaře, je citlivá žena, která své vysněné a vyčtené představy chce uplatnit ve skutečném životě, kde však tvrdě naráží na nepochopení a omezenost manžela. Trpí nudou a hledá únik ze stereotypu maloměstského života, který ji dusí. Vrhá se bezhlavě do milostných dobrodružství pohoršujících běžnou maloměstskou morálku, nedbá na finanční nesnáze a dokonce i mateřskou lásku obětuje svým iluzím. Takový život jí však připraví hořké zklamání, postupně ji zbaví nesplnitelných představ a nesmlouvavě ukáže tvrdou realitu. Z lásky k milenci se žena zadluží a lichvář použije jejích směnek, aby zničil celou rodinu. Přichází neodvratná katastrofa — Ema Bovaryová se otráví a zničený manžel umírá krátce po ní.
