The American Civil War not only pitted brother against brother but Christian against Christian. This is a study of soldiers' religious beliefs and how they influenced the course of that tragic conflict. It shows how Christian teaching and practice shaped the worldview of soldiers on both sides.

Commanders on the losing side of battles are often viewed harshly, labeled as "losers" without recognition of their abilities and achievements. This volume challenges such simplistic views by examining Civil War generals who faced the stigma of failure. The authors reject the notion that significant defeats stem solely from poor generalship and instead analyze the various factors contributing to these outcomes. They explore the concept of "capable failures," highlighting officers with strong pre-war reputations and distinguished records. Through seven case studies, the authors consider both Confederate and Union generals. They detail how Albert Sidney Johnston struggled against extreme conditions, Joe Hooker and John C. Pemberton were outmatched by Lee and Grant, and how George B. McClellan and Don Carlos Buell faced political and military complications. Additionally, Joseph E. Johnston's inability to adapt to challenges in Virginia is examined. An extra chapter focuses on generals at the Battle of Gettysburg, illustrating how failure to adjust can thwart even seasoned leaders. Steven Woodworth notes that understanding why a general fell short offers more insight than merely condemning their decisions. This work aims to deepen our understanding of military command's nature and limitations, rather than rehabilitating reputations.
