Theory of the Earth is a combination reference and textbook that every exploration geologist and research scientist should have on his/her bookshelf. It is also suitable for advanced undergraduate, as well as graduate level geophysics courses. The emphasis is on the origin, evolution, structure and composition of the earth's interior. It treats the pertinent aspects of solid state physics, thermodynamics, geochemistry, petrology, and seismology in sufficient detail for all who seek current information on geochemistry, solid state physics, and physics of the earth or planets.

    • This volume takes an interdisciplinary approach to understanding hotspot volcanism. Written by scientists from around the world, the 47 chapters are mostly concerned with the mechanisms of volcanism. The emphasis is on solving problems with the plume hypothesis, as well as exploring alternative explanations for melting anomalies. The volume features over 150 color illustrations and many more in black and white. The papers were originally presented at the international Plume IV conference, sponsored by the Geological Society of America in 2003. Editor Foulger teaches earth sciences at the U. of Durham.
