Celebrity culture today is filled with stars who challenge traditional notions of a "normal" body. Plus-size and older actresses are defying the cultural fixation on slenderness and youth, while physically disabled performers are breaking free from limiting stereotypes. Actors of diverse races and ethnicities are reshaping narratives about cultural belonging, and transgender artists are questioning societal assumptions about gender and identity. However, do these emerging figures truly indicate a broader acceptance of body diversity in popular culture? Through six key examples—Melissa McCarthy, Gabourey Sidibe, Peter Dinklage, Danny Trejo, Betty White, and Laverne Cox—this work explores the evolving body politics of stardom. Each star is examined in relation to significant cultural anxieties surrounding bodies and inclusion, addressing issues such as the obesity epidemic, postracial rhetoric, disability rights, Latino/a immigration, an aging population, and transgender activism. Utilizing a diverse array of sources—films, TV shows, and entertainment journalism—Russell Meeuf analyzes how these celebrities' media personas reflect a more complex reality. While they are often celebrated as symbols of a more inclusive industry, the analysis reveals the limitations of inclusion in a deeply unequal society, highlighting how their bodies serve as battlegrounds for negotiating cultural citizenship.
