Seventeen is a brilliant novel on any level - but as a thriller it's a gripping page turner, while remaining moving and complex. It's a deeply satisfying read and it will be a while before I read anything as good. William Ryan

In Japan, am Polizeipräsidium der Präfektur D, stehen Inspektor Futawatari und Abteilungsleiterin Tomoko Nanao vor zwei herausfordernden Fällen. Futawatari untersucht die Weigerung von Kriminalpolizei-Legende Osakabe, in den Ruhestand zu gehen, während Nanao den mysteriösen Fall einer vermissten Polizistin aufklären muss.

Der 49-jährige Sochiro Kaji genießt als vorbildlicher Polizist einen tadellosen Ruf – bis er sich eines Tages vor seine Kollegen stellt und berichtet, seine Frau getötet zu haben. Im anschließenden Verhör gibt er an, dass seine Frau an Alzheimer erkrankt war und ihn gebeten habe, ihr Leben zu beenden. Der Fall scheint aufgeklärt, doch Kriminalkommissar Kazumasa Shiki findet keine Ruhe. Als er auf eigene Faust weiterermittelt, stößt er in der Wohnung von Sochiro auf eine geheimnisvolle Kalligrafie mit dem Text: »50 Jahre – ein Leben«. Nanao ist für alle weiblichen Polizeikräfte der Präfektur verantwortlich und hat einen dunklen Verdacht. Als Nanao im Polizistinnen-Wohnheim erfährt, dass die vermisste Frau von einem mysteriösen jungen Mann umworben wurde, beginnt ein Wettlauf gegen die Zeit.
