Život dítěte za války Autorčiny vzpomínky na dětská léta prožitá v době fašismu v Maďarsku a po válce v emigraci v Německu, Paříži a nakonec na Kubě. Vyprávění autorka začíná v březnu 1944, kdy je jí deset let a kdy nacistické Německo obsadí její vlast. Zahájí deportaci židů, nejprve z venkova a od října 1944 i z Budapešti, kde malá Magda s rodinou žije. Její otec emigroval již dříve a zanechal ji s matkou a bratrem osudu. Museli se nejen skrývat, ale každý den tvrdě bojovat o přežití, a právě toto období je osou příběhu. Válka Magdě vzala nejen bratra, ale i další příbuzné. Po válce mnoho lidí z Maďarska utíkalo a pro odchod se rozhodl i zbytek její rodiny. V další části líčí těžkou cestu tzv. toulavých židů poválečnou Evropou, včetně německých běženeckých táborů a krátkého pobytu v Paříži. Odtud se přeplavili na Kubu a zde také autorčino vzpomínání končí.

When her family goes into hiding from the fascist Arrow-Cross, she is torn from the "castle" of intimacies shared with her adored and adoring older brother and plunged into a world of incomprehensible deprivation, separation, and loss. In 1944, Magda Denes was ten years old and living in Budapest. Squeezed into a tiny two-room apartment with her mother, adored brother Ivan, grandparents, aunt and cousin Erwin, the family were learning to adapt to the brutal regime of the occupying German forces. As rumours filtered through about concentration camps and mass deportations, Hungarian Jews found their lives more and more desperate. Starving, terrified, indiscriminately murdered, tortured and abused, they were now barricaded in underground ghettos. They formed militant resistance groups that went out by night to fight the Germans. Ivan and Erwin, both resistance fighters, were shot. Magda's grandfather died of starvation. The depleted family escaped from Budapest and with great difficulty made their way to Spain, via France, and then by boat to America, and a new life.
