Nad některými rozhodnutími politiků zůstává rozum stát. Kniha Davida Owena odhaluje, že mnohé z těchto kroků vyplývají z nemocí, jimiž politik trpí, anebo souvisí s jevem, který sám autor nazývá "syndrom hybris", tedy s jakousi "zpupností z povolání". Podle Owena vede přehnaná sebedůvěra u politika k tomu, že nedbá rad, ztrácí kontakt s realitou, a tím i soudnost, a ponechává si výhradní právo k rozhodování.
