Děj se odehrává během čtyř dnů v Sydney a v nedalekém okresním městě Franklinu, kam přijíždí mladá,těhotná žena,která má provést revizi účtů v malé firmě Catchprice Motors,které hrozí bankrot.Dochází tak k osudovému setkání daňové inspektorky se členy rodiny.Jsou to nešťastní,osamělí a frustrovaní jedinci,kteří se snaží uniknout z tíživé reality a uskutečnit své představy o životě.V četných retrospektivách vzpomínají na dětství a mládí,odhalují dávná rodinná tajemství,např.sexuální zneužívání dětí.Závěrečné střetnutí inspektorky a nejmladšího člena rodiny,agresivního zloděje a narkomana,končí tragicky.Původně realistický příběh se mění v hrůzný sen,plný krve a násilí.Próza se vyznačuje sugestivní atmosférou,dějovou sevřeností,hlubokým ponorem do psychologie nejednoznačných postav,které autor občas charakterizuje i vulgárním jazykem.

Neobvyklý milostný román se společensko-kritickým podtextem se odehrává ve 2. pol. 19. stol. v Austrálii mezi knězem anglikánské církve a svéráznou majitelkou sklárny. Hrdinou je neurotický mladý anglikánský kněz, syn asketického sektáře, který se k víře obrací ze vzdoru a po zbytek života je vystaven určitým pochybám o své volbě. Touží odejít mezi domorodce a šířit mezi nimi svou víru, ale jeho plán se nikdy neuskuteční. Na svých nekonečných cestách se seznámí s nekonvenční majitelkou sklárny a vzájemná láska je pro něho zdrojem dalších pochyb a frustrací, zvláště, když oba spojuje nezvladatelná hráčská vášeň. Na jejich společný osud tvrdě působí podmínky rozvíjející se koloniální společnosti v Austrálii 19. století a tak jejich příběh nemůže skončit jinak než tragicky. Autor v knížce spojuje velice rafinovaně jemnou komiku a nenápadnou ironii s hluboce soucitným pohledem na lidskou existenci, zaznamenává mezi řádky traumata, jimiž Austrálie dodnes trpí a prostřednictvím neúspěšných hrdinů nabízí i dva pohledy na negativní vliv evropské kolonizace Austrálie. Autor za svou knihu získal v 80. letech Bookerovu cenu.

Může být politická fikce románem? Spisovatel Peter Carey oživuje velkého francouzského filozofa Alexise de Tocqueville a jeho cestu do Ameriky, z níž vzešlo dílo Demokracie v Americe - první velká studie o mravech, morálce a politice ve Spojených státech, prostřednictvím fiktivních postav Oliviera de Garmonta a Johna „Parrota“ Larrita, jeho sluhy a špicla zároveň. A když odjíždí Olivier do Nového světa studovat vězeňský systém, ač si chce ve skutečnosti jen zachránit krk, k pramalé radosti je Parrot vypraven s ním. Děj cesty je vyprávěn střídavě z perspektivy obou protagonistů jako pikareskní dobrodružství lásky a politiky na pozadí dějin staré vlasti a v perspektivě dobývání nových zemí. Navzdory okolnostem vzniká mezi oběma přátelství. Kniha Parrot a Olivier v Americe byla v loňském roce v užším výběru na nejvyšší britské literární ocenění Man Booker Prize.
