Bezpečná zóna Goražde není příjemná kniha. Ukazuje a líčí to, co většina z nás nikdy nezažije, ukrutnosti a zvěrstva, která si většina z nás sotva dokáže představit. Ještě před pár lety si je nedokázali představit ani muslimští obyvatelé Goražde a přece k nim došlo. Saccovi se tu podařilo zachytit příběhy obětí války, které překračují rámec běžné deníkové žurnalistiky a jež by jinak jistě upadly do zapomnění. Bezpečná zóna Goražde však není jen válečnou kronikou, katalogem hrůz a odsouzením lhostejnosti mezinárodního společenství, ale i dojemným líčením lidské schopnosti přestát takřka jakékoli strádání.

Když v roce 1956 zastřelili izraelští vojáci v Chánu Júnis a Rafahu bezmála čtyři sta lidí, šlo zdánlivě jen o poznámku pod čarou v dlouhé a krvavé historii izraelsko-palestinského konfliktu. Byl to chladnokrevný masakr, nebo jen hrozná chyba? Právě na to se padesát let poté Joe Sacco snaží přijít v rozhovorech s uprchlíky, vdovami i šejky. Jeho pátráním a historickými retrospektivami se ovšem prolíná současnost Gazy: druhá intifáda, islámští radikálové a bourání stovek palestinských domů v Rafahu. Tak jako v Palestině a Bezpečné zóně Goražde se Saccovi i tentokrát podařilo objektivně přiblížit čtenáři jeden z nejtrpčích konfliktů našeho věku a kombinací orální historie, memoárů a komiksové reportáže zachytit tragédii v krystalicky čisté podobě. „Chci, aby lidé u tohoto románu docenili ztracené molekuly konfliktu: detaily, jež definitivně zmizí s lidmi, kteří si je pamatují. Rovněž ale chci, aby si lidé uvědomili, že televizní zprávy sledují bez kontextu a že historie nic neodpouští. Jeden incident může doznívat celé století nebo i déle.“

Dědic Roberta Crumba a Arta Spiegelmana přichází s mistrovským dílem komiksové novinařiny o severoamerických domorodcích, těžbě surovin a našemu dluhu vůči přírodě. V širokém údolí řeky Mackenzie žijí Denéové dle svého líčení odnepaměti. Denéové cítí, že oni patří zemi a ne naopak – země je klíčová pro jejich živobytí i vlastní způsob života. Jenže v Severozápadních teritoriích subarktické Kanady se rovněž nacházejí cenné přírodní zdroje včetně ropy, plynu a diamantů. S těžbou přišla pracovní místa a investice – ale také stavba silnic, potrubí a jedovatý odpad, které zjizvily krajinu, a alkohol, drogy a dluhy, které drasticky proměnily životní styl domorodých obyvatel. V komiksu Zaplatit zemi cestuje Joe Sacco po zamrzlém Severu a nachází lidi, kteří se snaží vyrovnat s rozporuplnými důsledky průmyslového rozvoje a nevyčíslitelnými ztrátami krutého koloniálního dědictví. Na pozadí rozlehlé a nádherné krajiny, v níž lidé vypadají zcela malincí, Sacco zpovídá trapery a náčelníky, aktivisty a kněží, a vypráví pak rozmáchlý příběh o penězích, závislosti, ztrátách a kultuře, s ohromujícími vizuálními detaily, na něž jsme si u tohoto velkého komiksového reportéra dávno a rádi zvykli.

Za první intifády, v letech 1991 a 1992, strávil Joe Sacco dva měsíce s Palestinci na Západním břehu Jordánu a v pásmu Gazy. Na cestách si dělal poznámky a po návratu do Spojených států napsal a nakreslil komiks Palestina, v němž citlivě a přitom s humorem vylíčil, jaké je to žít, pracovat, cestovat, mít děti, přežívat a umírat jako Palestinec. Palestina je reportáž, ne politická polemika, Sacco v ní nenavrhuje žádná snadná řešení (ba vůbec žádná), jen dokumentuje bolest a utrpení lidí způsobem, jaký vám tradiční média jen těžko zprostředkují.

Když se válečný reportér Joe Sacco vrátil roku 2001 do Bosny, hledal snad jediného člověka, který byl ochoten otevřeně mluvit o šílenství, jemuž tato země několik let předtím propadla. Tímto člověkem byl válečný veterán Neven, kterému se říkalo „Šíbr“, protože za správnou cenu dokázal zahraničním novinářům v Sarajevu zařídit opravdu ledacos: výlet na frontu, kontakty na důležité lidi i na prostitutky. Jeho služeb využil roku 2001 i sám autor Joe Sacco a záhy mu došlo, že Nevenův příběh je mikrokosmem celého balkánského konfliktu. Šíbr vypráví o vzestupu polovojenských magnátů, díky jejichž fanatické odvaze nepodlehlo Sarajevo etnickým čistkám, ale kteří se nevyhnutelně nechali zkorumpovat mocí, krvežíznivostí a nacionalistickými bludy.

In late 1995 and early 1996, cartoonist/reporter Joe Sacco travelled four times to Gorazde, a UN-designated safe area during the Bosnian War, which had teetered on the brink of obliteration for three and a half years. Still surrounded by Bosnian Serb forces, the mainly Muslim people of Gorazde had endured heavy attacks and severe privation to hang on to their town while the rest of Eastern Bosnia was brutally 'cleansed' of its non-Serb population. But as much as SAFE AREA GORAZDE is an account of a terrible siege, it presents a snapshot of people who were slowly letting themselves believe that a war was ending and that they had survived. Before Joe Sacco crafted his two major works of 'cartoon journalism', "Palestine" and "Safe Area Gorazde", he created a number of shorter pieces, ranging from one-page gags to thirty-page 'graphic novelettes'. This book finally collects the entirety of Sacco's earlier journalistic and autobiographical work, plus a sizeable serving of his satirical strips, many of them never before collected in book form. The centrepieces in "Notes from a Defeatist" are a triptych of war "When Good Bombs Happen to Bad People", a history of aerial bombing that specifically targets civilian populations; "More Women, More Children, More Quickly", in which Sacco relates his mother's harrowing experiences during World War II in Malta; and, most personally (and closest to Sacco's later work), "How I Loved the War", Sacco's impassioned but sardonic reflection on the GulfWar, the surrounding propaganda and media circus, and his own ambivalent feelings as both a spectator and commentator. "Notes from a Defeatist" also includes a roadie's-eye view of an American punk band's eventful European tour, a reminiscence of an awful season spent in his native Malta, and much more.

Anhand dreier Reportage-Comics zeichnet Joe Sacco ein vielschichtiges Bild von Sarajevo am Ende des Bosnienkrieges: Neven, Der Fixer, schlug sich vor dem Krieg als Waffenhändler und Bankräuber durch und diente als Waffenexperte und Scharfschütze in der jugoslawischen Armee, ehe er in Sarajevo als Guide für Journalisten arbeitet. Dank Nevens Hilfe gelingt es Sacco, Opfer und Täter des Krieges zu interviewen. Soba hingegen ist ein depressiver Maler und Musiker, dessen Tätigkeit als Tretminenleger an der Front um Sarajevo ihn in seinen Träumen verfolgt und der nun orientierungslos durch die Trümmer seines Lebens irrt. Er führt Sacco kurz vor Kriegsende 1995 durch die Nachtclubs und Bars von Sarajevo, wo der Comic-Journalist auf eine desillusionierte Generation kriegsversehrter Jugendlicher stößt. In Weihnachten mit Karadzic versucht Joe Sacco zusammen mit einem Radioreporter, den heute als Kriegsverbrecher angeklagten Radovan Karadzic vor ein Mikrophon zu bekommen. Nach einer Odyssee durch den serbischen Teil Bosniens begegnen die beiden ihm schließlich ausgerechnet vor einer Kirche.

August 2013, Uttar Pradesh, Nordindien. Im mehrheitlich muslimischen Kawal erstechen zwei junge Hindus einen gleichaltrigen Muslim auf offener Straße. Die Täter werden daraufhin von einer aufgebrachten Menge ermordet. Nach Massenprotesten eskalieren die Ereignisse und es kommt zu wiederholten Überfällen der Angehörigen beider Religionsgemeinschaften aufeinander, die mehrere Dutzend Tote fordern und die Flucht Zehntausender Muslime zur Folge haben.
