Americká autorka Annie Proulx, která žije střídavě ve Wyomingu a na Newfoundlandu, je literární hlas, jejž nelze přeslechnout. Pro děj svého v pořadí čtvrtého románu Drsná země si vybrala Texas a Oklahomu, kam přijíždí z Denveru Bob Dollar, který v pětadvaceti po skončení studia nevěděl, kam se vrtnout, a přijal práci u společnosti, jež hledá v zemědělských státech místa, kde by mohla založit farmy na chov vepřů. Usazuje se v texaském městečku Woolybucket, pomalu přichází na chuť zemi, která nikomu nedává nic zadarmo, a poznává, jak staří farmáři lpí na půdě, jež uhnětla jejich životy během velkých změn, jimiž v minulém století země prošla. Román zaujme svojí originalitou a přímočarostí a především nezapomenutelnou hlavní postavou.

Nová sbírka povídek tematicky navazující na slavnou Zkrocenou horu, jejichž děj je zasazen do drsné krajiny rurálního Wyomingu, zobrazuje mnohdy tíživý životní úděl zdejších obyvatel. Hrdiny autorčiných příběhů jsou rozdílné postavy a charaktery z rozličných časových období - vysloužilý rančer, mladá dvojice z průkopnických časů, indiánský kmen z doby kamenné, chytač koní nebo dívka bojující v Iráku. Ti všichni vyrůstají ze společných kořenů a jsou spojeni láskou k rodnému kraji, který je líbezný, ale chudý a divoký, a nedá nikomu nic zadarmo.
