Spojení pojmu středověk se subsaharskou Afrikou zní pro českého čtenáře nezvykle, neboť v češtině zatím mnoho publikací umožňujících seznámit se s bohatstvím tamějších kultur a civilizací v 8.–15. století nemáme. Toto dlouhé období zůstává obecně pro celkový nedostatek pramenů neznámým, mohli bychom říci temným. Přesto se i zde nabízí řada záchytných bodů, ať už z dochovaných vyprávění některých osobností, nebo nalezených předmětů. Historik a archeolog François-Xavier Fauvelle-Aymar ve své knize vycházející z jeho celoživotních výzkumů představuje Afriku „zlatých věků“ pomocí příběhů a průvodců, jejichž očima Afriku poznáváme. Jsou mezi nimi obchodníci, dobrodruzi, geografové či diplomaté z dávné minulosti, ale i současní archeologové. A tak díky nim objevujeme sídla bohatých panovníků, hustě obydlená města, kde se setkávali obchodníci z islámského i neislámského světa, a trhy, kde směňovali ambru, otroky a zlato za luxusní nádobí, kovové ingoty, sůl nebo mušličky, které dováželi při svém obchodování se vzdálenou Asií.
