This volume includes Hell's detailed notes and measurements from the event, along with commentary by modern astronomers.

V denníku zaznamenáva merania uskutočňované počas spomínanej polárnej expedície – určenie výšky svetového pólu a jednotlivých hviezd v rôznych severských destináciách, meranie magnetickej odchýlky, pozorovanie polárnych žiar, meteorologické pozorovania a vykonávanie časových korekcií. Predovšetkým sú však informácie v ňom unikátnym, doposiaľ v slovenčine nezverejneným dokladom jeho pozorovania prechodu Venuše popred slnečný disk 3. júna 1769 a pozorovania zatmenia Slnka v nasledujúci deň. Vedecký denník Maximiliána Hella, ktorý takmer 250 rokov ležal vo viedenskom archíve, uzrel prvýkrát svetlo sveta v slovenskom jazyku vďaka ústretovosti Univ. Prof. Dr. Marie Gertrude Firneis.
