Raj Patel je oceňovaný spisovatel, aktivista a akademik. Doktorát ze sociologie získal na Cornell University a působil na Yale, v Berkeley a v současnosti je na univerzitě v Texasu. Jako aktivista se podílel na organizaci alterglobalizačních protestů v Seattlu v roce 1999 a je aktivní v hnutí za potravinovou suverenitu a spolupracuje s řadou sociálních hnutí organizovaných zdola. Považuje se za libertinského socialistu a sám sebe označuje jako „někoho, kdo má velmi silné anarchistické cítění“.
