Poetically written and originally given as lectures, this is a moving essay collection from Durs Grünbein. In his four Lord Weidenfeld Lectures held in Oxford in 2019, German poet Durs Grünbein dealt with a topic that has occupied his mind ever since he began to perceive his own position within the past of his nation, his linguistic community, and his family: How is it possible that history can determine the individual poetic imagination and segregate it into private niches? Shouldn't poetry look at the world with its own sovereign eyes instead? In the form of a collage or "photosynthesis," in image and text, Grünbein lets the fundamental opposition between poetic license and almost overwhelming bondage to history appear in an exemplary way. From the seeming trifle of a stamp with the portrait of Adolf Hitler, he moves through the phenomenon of the "Führer's streets" and into the inferno of aerial warfare. In the end, Grünbein argues that we are faced with the powerlessness of writing and the realization, valid to this day, that comes from confronting history. As he muses, "There is something beyond literature that questions all writing."

A dazzling selection of more than one hundred poems that trace the development of Durs Grünbein's work over the past two decades. Born in Dresden in 1962, Durs Grünbein is the most significant and successful poet of his generation in Germany. Since 1988, when the then-twenty-five-year-old burst onto the scene with his poetry collection Grauzone morgens--a mordant reckoning with the East Germany he grew up in--Grünbein has published more than thirty books of poetry and prose, which have been translated into dozens of languages. In 2005 the volume Ashes for Breakfast introduced Grünbein to English-language readers for the first time by sampling poetry from his first four collections. Psyche Running picks up where that volume left off and offers a selection of poems from his nine subsequent collections, which shows how Grünbein has developed from his ironic take on the classical into an elegiac exploration of history through dream fragments and poems with a haunting existential unease.

Heribert C. Ottersbach (*1960) ist in den vergangenen Jahren immer wieder mit viel beachteten Ausstellungen an die Öffentlichkeit getreten. Über ihre malerische Qualität hinaus folgt seine Kunst einem gezielt konzeptuellen Ansatz. Sie umkreist Fragen nach der Geschichte der Moderne und ihrer medialen Vermittlung ebenso wie Fragen nach dem Stellenwert von Kunst, der Bedeutung des Ateliers sowie der Rolle und der Position des Künstlers im gegenwärtigen gesellschaftlichen Kontext. Für Ottersbach ist Malerei integraler Bestandteil des gesellschaftlichen Diskurses, ein Ort, gedankliche Vorgänge malerisch-bildnerisch zu platzieren. Vor diesem Hintergrund entstanden vor allem ab 1995 seine großen, sich teilweise ineinander verschränkenden Werkgruppen wie Modernebilder, Echtzeit 6889 oder auch die Archivbilder. Die Publikation mit einer ausführlichen Künstlerbiografie präsentiert rund 120 Werke aus den Jahren 1995 bis heute. "In welchem schneebedeckten Jahrhundert, mit Fingern / Steif / auf bereifte Scheiben gemalt, erschien dieser Plan / Zur Berechnung der Seelen?", schrieb Durs Grünbein vor Jahren in einem Gedicht mit dem Titel Meditation nach Descartes. Der Held und das Leitmotiv des Gedichts sind nun zurückgekehrt in Form einer langen Eloge auf den Philosophen. Mehrere Winter lang hat der Autor an einem Poem gearbeitet, das nun vollständig vorliegt mit 42 Cantos, die den Kapiteln eines Romans entsprechen. Vom Schnee umkreist jenen Moment im Leben des René Descartes, da dieser im Winter des Jahres 1619 in einem süddeutschen Städtchen, einer Vision gehorchend, zu philosophieren beginnt. Das Erzählgedicht endet in einem anderen Winter, 30 Jahre später, mit dem plötzlichen Tod des Philosophen. In fortlaufenden Szenen werden Jugend und Reife des großen Denkers an der Schwelle der Neuzeit ineinandergespiegelt nach der Regie eines Traums.Vom Schnee oder Descartes in Deutschland ist vieles. Ein Bilderrätsel; eine Unterhaltung in Versen, eine Hommage an die kälteste Jahreszeit und die Lehre von der Brechung des Lichts. Ein Bericht von den Schrecken des Dreißigjährigen Krieges und von der Geburt des Rationalismus aus dem Geist des Schnees.

Der Begriff Metapher leitet sich ab vom griechischen metà phérein (anderswo hintragen), was in der Antike meist 'per Schiff' bedeutete, so daß die Seefahrt bald selbst zur Metapher für die Dichtkunst wurde. Das Schiff als Symbol für den Aufbruch, das Wagnis des Lebens, gehört seither zu den beflügelndsten Bildern der Literatur, Meeres- und Tiefseephantasien finden wir nicht nur bei Homer und Melville, sondern auch bei Jules Verne, Baudelaire, T. S. Eliot, ja sogar bei Dante. In 14 Essays spürt Durs Grünbein der Faszination des Meeres nach, nicht nur in Büchern, sondern auch im Museo Archeologico von Paestum und auf dem Grund des Tyrrhenischen Meers.
